Breast ReductionBreast Reduction
Breast reduction is recommended when the breasts are too large, creating physical pain or an unattractive shape and heaviness. Breast tissue is approximately 85 to 90 percent fatty tissue. The younger the breast, the more glandular tissue and less fatty tissue there is.
Women often come to us with complaints of back pain, shoulder pain, grooving of the shoulders, and infections or irritation underneath the fold of the breasts. We do not process insurance at Maxwell Aesthetics, however In some cases, insurance will reimburse some or all of the cost of breast reduction. To qualify for coverage, normally a pound must be taken off each breast. We find that if the breast is not a DD cup or larger, removing a pound of tissue would result in a breast that is too small. During your consultation, we can evaluate whether you might fit the insurance qualifying criteria.
Reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes three to four hours. During the procedure, excess breast tissue is removed, the remaining breast tissue reshaped on the chest, and the skin tissue tightened around the new mound of breast tissue. All breast tissue removed is sent to a pathologist to screen for any abnormalities. Scars are visible around the nipple-areolar complex and vertically to the fold of the breast. We make every attempt to limit the size and length of these scars. Depending on the breast size beforehand, the desired breast size, the integrity of the soft tissue, and the age of the patient, we use various reduction techniques and discuss these in the individual consultation.
